The port of Hampton Roads moved 5 percent more cargo in February than the year before, according to port officials. For the 12 months ending in February, the port moved a record 6.5 million tons, an 8 percent increase over the previous period.

\ Sunset magazine, founded in 1898 to lure settlers and tourists to the West, will be sold to Time Warner Inc., the world's largest media and entertainment conglomerate, in a deal worth $225 million. New York-based Time acquired Warner Communications in January for $14 billion.

\ Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it would shut its assembly plant in Lorain, Ohio, next week, idling about 2,700 hourly workers, because of slow sales of the Thunderbird and Cougar models.

\ Directors of the J.C. Penney Co. on Thursday raised the company's quarterly dividend from 56 cents to 66 cents a share with the May 1 payment.

\ Heilig-Meyers Co., a Richmond furniture chain of 304 stores with outlets throughout Western Virginia, reported 1989 earnings of $20 million, up from $17.1 million, and revenues of $393.4 million, up from $351.6 million.
