MAKER RECALLS PRIDE OF VIRGINIA CHICKEN SALAD

A Lynchburg food-processing company is voluntarily recalling 65 pounds of chicken salad because of possible bacterial contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced.

Pride of Virginia Meats Inc. is recalling "Pride of Virginia Salads - Chicken Salad," which is distributed within a 15-mile radius of Lynchburg. "EST. P-4038" is printed inside the USDA inspection seal on the label. The recalled chicken salad has a "sell by" date of March 26 on the bottom of the containers.

Dr. Lester M. Crawford, administrator of the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, said routine monitoring uncovered the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Consumption of food contaminated with that bacterium can cause listeriosis, a rare but potentially serious disease, he said.

Crawford said consumers should not open or taste the product. He said the packages should be returned to the place of purchase.
