STUDENT ATTACKS CONTINUE VALLEY BUREAU

Reports of attacks on female students continued at Radford University on Tuesday, when yet another woman told police that a man grabbed her while she was walking along a street near campus Monday night.

The student told city police she was walking on Fairfax Street shortly after 10 p.m. when a man jumped from between two parked cars.

He grabbed her from behind and tried to put his hand over her mouth, the woman told police. She hit him in the stomach with her elbow and ran away, Radford Lt. Jackie Roop said.

The man was described as white, about 5 feet 10, with short brown hair that was close-cut on the sides and tousled on top, Roop said.

This follows two reports of attacks on Radford students early Sunday near campus.

A New York man was arrested Sunday and charged with raping a student in an apartment near campus after the two returned from a party together. He was released from the city jail after posting bond, police said.

Police were still searching for another man in connection with an unrelated attack that same morning.

In that case, a Radford student told police she was walking in the 700 block of Fairfax Street when a man grabbed her from behind and dragged her to the ground. She said she screamed and scratched the man and he fled, police said.

Roop said the description of the suspect in Monday's attack does not match the man described to police Sunday morning. That man is white, about 5 feet 10 and had long brown hair and brown eyes and weighed about 180 pounds, the woman told police.

In recent weeks, city and campus police have increased patrols on and around campus. City police also have plainclothes officers patroling near campus at night.

Police emphasized that because of the recent attacks - and six others that were reported in January and February - women should not walk alone at night.

"We can't stress that enough. It just puzzles me why they're not doing it, especially lately," Roop said. "There really needs to be at least two girls together."
