UVa officials this week signed a renewal annual contract to give the Sexual Assault Resource Agency $15,000 in the fiscal year starting July 1 for its 24-hour crisis center for rape victims.
UVa Vice President Ernest Ern said Tuesday that the amount reflects the school's fair share of the center's cost.
SARA gets some federal funding plus more than $10,500 a year from Albemarle County and a slightly larger amount from Charlottesville.
An ad hoc UVa committee on acquaintance rape this year convinced university officials that the school was not meeting the needs of its students, Ern said.
UVa officials say the university has a serious problem with male students raping female students that they know. About one female student in every 10 at UVa has been sexually assaulted, according to a report presented last month by a women's studies committee.
