Col. Richard G. Engels, Henrico police chief, said Wednesday police have obtained capital murder petitions against Steve Eugene Rea, 16, Christopher M. Palmer, 16, and Jackie Lynn Kulp, 14, all of Henrico.
Police believe the three juveniles have fled to Florida in a 1989 Cheverolet Camaro owned by 17-year-old Larry E. Walker.
Walker and his parents, Larry W. Walker, 42, and Emily B. Walker, 40, were found shot to death in their Henrico County home about 9 a.m. Monday.
The Camaro was spotted near a construction business on Virginia 657 south of Ashland at 4 a.m., said Lt. Howard L. Wray Jr. of the Hanover Sheriff's Department.
Wray said the car was reported by an employee who called in the license to the Sheriff's Department.
"We don't know what they were doing out there," Wray said. "Nothing appears to be tampered with or stolen."
Wray said Hanover authorities traced the license plate number and informed Henrico police that the car belonged to Walker and asked them to find out why the car had been at the business.
Shortly after 5 a.m., Hanover received a response from Henrico police saying the car had been located but that officers could not find the owner of the vehicle, Wray said.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch, quoting an unnamed source, reported in today's editions that two Henrico officers found the car parked at the Walkers' house and questioned the three teen-agers.
The youths claimed to be friends of Larry Walker, who was also known as Eddie, who they said had given them permission to use his car, the source said.
The three said they had no identification and gave the officers false names, the source said.
The source said the officers heard a television blaring from the Walker home and left after they knocked on the front door and no one answered.
Engels said Wednesday that a message was received from Hanover early Monday morning, but he refused to say whether county police went to the Walker home before the discovery of the slain family.
