UVA BREAKS TRADITION IN PICKING NEW RECTOR

Edward E. Elson of Atlanta today became the first out-of-state resident elected rector of the University of Virginia.

Elson, 56, was named rector pro-tem in February by outgoing Rector Joshua P. Darden Jr. He becomes the 34th person to serve as rector. Thomas Jefferson was the first.

Elson, appointed to the board in 1984 by then-Gov. Charles Robb, is former chairman of Elson's of Atlanta News Agency Inc. He was the first chairman of National Public Radio and was educated at Phillips Academy, received a bachelor's degree with honors from the University of Virginia and a law degree from Emory University.
