KIWANIS CLUBS WILL HONOR SPORTSMEN

Three Kiwanis clubs will be recognizing Roanoke-area scholastic basketball players, coaches and officials tonight at the Quality Inn in Salem.

The 23rd annual event, sponsored by the Salem, Williamson Road and Botetourt Kiwanis clubs, will honor the top players from 11 schools; the "unsung heroes" of the 11 teams; the top official, voted on by the members of the Southwest Virginia Officials Association; the school selected as the sportsmanship winner, voted on by the game officials; and the coach of the year.

The all-Kiwanis Club team is headed by William Fleming junior Joe Fitzgerald, who was named player of the year. Four other seniors will join Fitzgerald on the honor team - Paul Jordan of William Byrd, Gary Martindale of Northside, Maurice Davenport of James River and Eric Walker of North Cross.

Named to the second team are Dontel Arrington of Fleming, Don Turpin of James River, Mike Fayed of Cave Spring, Brod Bonds of Byrd, Mike Decker of Glenvar and Brian Bowles of Roanoke Catholic. The second team had six players because of a tie vote.

The "unsung heroes," selected by the coaches, are: Bowles, Randy Rich of Salem, Curtis Alderman of Lord Botetourt; Taylor Ruble of North Cross; Pat Hayes of Cave Spring; Chris Stephenson of Byrd; Tony Webb of Patrick Henry; Mitch Semones of Glenvar; Kevin Greene of Northside; Tee Jennings of Fleming; and Jack Baker of James River.

John Shotwell, who led James River to the state Group A championship game, was selected coach of the year.

James River also was voted the sportsmanship award based on the conduct of the team, cheerleaders, fans and school officials.

Jerry Spangler was chosen to receive the Rex T. Mitchell officials' trophy.
