Bernys, a 38-year-old Buffalo, N.Y., native, assumed his new position March 10. He spent one month as officer-in-charge at the Salem post office after his predecessor, Kenneth Graham, left to become postmaster in Radford.
During his career, Bernys has been: a mail handler; clerk and supervisor in Buffalo; management associate in Richmond and in Rochester, N.Y.; and director of finance and director of customer services in Roanoke.
He comes to his new position after serving 18 months as director of city operations for the Roanoke post office.
The Salem post office serves nearly 30,000 people.
As postmaster, Bernys will be responsible for 14 clerks, 32 city carriers, seven rural carriers, two maintenance employees, a superintendent of postal operations and a supervisor of mails and delivery.
Bernys views his new job as a challenge.
"It will be something very different. As postmaster, basically, I'm the person who makes all decisions with regards to the Salem operation," he said. "My other jobs were more administrative positions."
He said he's been pleased with the office's operation and employee performance.
"Mr. Graham did a good job," Bernys said. "People here are very well trained in their duties. The office serves the customers of Salem very well."
