Blue ribbons increase child-abuse awareness\ A "Blue Ribbon Campaign" will be held in observance of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The Child Abuse Prevention Council and other sponsoring organizations will distribute 10,000 ribbons in an effort to increase awareness of child abuse.

Bonnie Finney of Norfolk started the campaign in 1989 when she tied a blue ribbon on the antenna of her van in memory of her grandson, whose battered body was found earlier in a weighted toolbox at the bottom of the Dismal Swamp Canal.

The ribbons that can be displayed on car antennas and in other locations are available at K Mart stores, Carter and Jones Dry Cleaning and Air-Lee Cleaners.

For more information on the prevention council's awareness efforts, call 344-3579.

\ Roanoke Valley SPCA to raise adoption fees

\ The Roanoke Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will raise its adoption fees for pets Sunday.

The new policy is in accordance with the "Prevent a Litter" campaign, designed to draw attention to the problem of pet overpopulation and the need to have all pets spayed or neutered.

The adoption fee will be raised from $30 to $50. People adopting pets will get a $30 certificate to be applied toward the cost of having the pet spayed or neutered. The certificates are honored by many Roanoke-area veterinarians, several of whom offer additional discounts for spaying or neutering animals adopted from the Roanoke Valley SPCA.
