Toxicity levels in the state's rivers and streams affect aquatic life, according to the EPA's Region III office in Philadelphia, but levels of heavy metals and other toxics are not high enough to warrant concern about eating fish from the streams.
Western Virginia companies and municipal facilities and the pollutants found by EPA in streams near them include:
Appalachian Power Co. Clinch River Plant, Carbo, copper in the Clinch River.
Federal Mogul, Blacksburg, copper and lead in the Roanoke River.
Galax Sewage Treatment Plant, silver, cyanide, copper, lead, cadmium and phthalate esters in Chestnut Creek.
Georgia Bonded Fibers, Buena Vista, zinc in the Maury River.
J.P. Stevens Elasomerics Plant, Stuart, copper cadmium and cyanide in Rhody Creek.
J.P. Stevens Woolwine Plant, Woolwine, copper and cadmium in the Smith River.
Magnox Pulaski, Pulaski, cadmium, mercury, silver and lead in Peak Creek.
Martinsville Sewage Treatment Plant, copper, lead and silver in the Smith River.
Roanoke Sewage Treatment Plant, lead in the Roanoke River.
Roanoke Electric Steel, Roanoke, zinc, copper, lead and silver in Peters Creek.
Westvaco Corp., Covington, dioxin in the Jackson River.
State officials now are required to develop new water discharge permits for each facility by February.
The EPA issued a proposed list of polluters last June. Thursday's list deleted five dischargers and added 14 dischargers to the original listing. Dale Wismer, chief of the EPA's general permits section in Philadelphia, said Thursday he did not have information immediately available on which listings are new and which were removed from the list.
***CORRECTION***
Published correction ran on April 4, 1990\ Clarification: Because of incorrect information provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a story in Friday's paper failed to list Modine Manufacturing of Buena Vista among companies and municipalities accused of polluting Virginia waterways. Modine has been accused of discharging phthalate esters into Indian Gap Run in Buena Vista.
