THREE UNIVERSITIES PROPOSE RAISING TUITION

Three Virginia universities have proposed tuition increases for state residents of between 9.4 and 16 percent to offset cuts in state funding, school officials said.

George Mason University's governing board said Wednesday undergraduate tuition will rise by as much as 9.4 percent, or up to $2,508, for Virginians and by as much as 21.5 percent, or up to $6,168, for out-of-state applicants.

The University of Virginia is considering boosting tuition by 9.6 percent, or up to $2,938, for in-state students. The cost for out-of-state students at UVa would rise by 14.8 percent, or up to $8,108.

At Norfolk State the governing board earlier this month considered tuition and fee increases of about 16 percent for Virginia students and 15 percent for non-state residents.
