OLIVER NORTH TO SPEAK ON `FREEDOM' AT W&L

Oliver North, former member of the National Security Council and a key figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, will speak Monday night at Washington and Lee University.

North's lecture, which is open to the public, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the university's Warner Center.

The topic is "Freedom."

Born in San Antonio, Texas, North graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1968. He later served in Vietnam, earning several medals and commendations.

He became a controversial national figure in the 1980s for his role in the Iran-Contra scandal. He was convicted May 4, 1989, of three scandal-related felonies.

North's daughter, Tait, is a student at W&L. - Staff report
