ALASKANS GET MOST FROM UNCLE SAM

Alaskans led the nation in receiving federal money last year, while the U.S. government's lowest per-person expenses were in Michigan.

Uncle Sam spent $5,680.26 per resident in Alaska in fiscal 1989, the Census Bureau reported Thursday. At the low end of the scale was Michigan, where the government spent $2,800.92 per person.

Virginia ranked third, with $5,257.90.

The District of Columbia received more than any state, $25,189.53 per resident, because thousands of people work there for the federal government.

Nationally, the government spent an average of $3,700.59 per person last year. Spending was above that level in 18 states and below it in 32.

The analysis covers such spending as grants to state and local governments, salaries and wages paid by federal agencies, direct payments to individuals - such as Social Security - and purchasing of goods and services.
