BOARD RAISES UVA TUITION

State residents will pay 9.6 percent more to get an education at the University of Virginia next year, as tuition will be raised from $2,708 to $2,966, the board of visitors decided Friday.

Tuition for out-of-state students will jump 14.8 percent, from $7,060 per year to $8,108. The increase, which should raise about $9 million, will mean out-of-state students will be paying 90 percent of the cost of their education, officials said.

The board also voted to increase room and board rates, with the average increases being 7.5 percent for rooms and 8.7 percent for board.
