Bennett's touchdown came on an 8-yard pass from Tommy Zban, another rising sophomore.
Zban has moved to the top of the depth chart at quarterback in spring practice because of injuries to Will Furrer and Rodd Wooten. Furrer is recuperating from knee surgery he had in the fall, and Wooten damaged the rotator cuff in his right (throwing) shoulder earlier this spring.
Zban was 5-of-11 for 38 yards with one interception. Dave Strock, a nephew of former Tech star Don Strock, was 6-of-13 for 61 yards with an interception.
"The effort was great and that's a plus," said Hokies coach Frank Beamer. "The defense stole the show for most of the scrimmage, but the offense did well on some goal-line work at the finish."
Tackle Jerome Preston made one of the day's biggest plays, intercepting a pass and returning it 32 yards. Safety Damien Russell, linebacker Roger Garland and cornerback Greg Lassiter also had interceptions. Preston and Garland each had a sack.
David Bullock, listed fourth on the depth chart, rushed for touchdowns of 6 and 3 yards. Vaughn Hebron, Phil Bryant and Lamar Smith also scored on short runs. Hebron finished with 38 yards, Bryant 36 and Bullock 19.
The Hokies will continue to practice four days a week leading up to the annual Maroon-Orange game, which will be played Saturday, April 21, at Lane Stadium. - Staff report
