Doctors were unsure of the cause of death, said a nursing supervisor at Riverside Middle Peninsula Hospital.
The boy, James Richard Dawson, was a second-grader at Petsworth Elementary School. He had moved to the area a few months ago, said Principal J.D. Briggs.
Briggs said he was called by a teacher about 3:20 p.m. to the bus loading area, where it appeared as though the child had passed out. When Briggs noticed the boy's lips were turning blue, he called a rescue squad and summoned two teachers who gave the child cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Briggs said that the boy had no health problems or record of illness at Petsworth. "He's a fine little boy," the principal said.
