Total costs for a cadet whose home is in Virginia will rise from $6,540 to $7,070, or 8.1 percent, with the increase. For out-of-state students, the price will leap from $10,640 to $11,990, a 12.7 percent raise.
The increase was made necessary by rising costs and state budget cuts, said VMI spokesman Tom Joynes.
Joynes and board member Jim Enochs both noted that a student's bill at VMI, unlike other Virginia colleges, includes not only tuition but meals, clothing, a room and laundry service. Joynes said a cadet can show up at VMI in the fall without money in his pocket and still be set for the entire school year.
The board, which met Saturday morning on the VMI campus, also announced that Gov. Douglas Wilder will be the speaker at commencement exercises May 19.
