MONTGOMERY

ITEM: The Montgomery County supervisors agreed last week to buy a tract of land adjacent to the courthouse in Christiansburg; currently, several businesses are on the site. All businesses are to vacate the buildings by July 1.

Item: For owners of at least a couple of the businesses, the news came out of the blue; it will be hard, they said, to find a suitable place to relocate by the deadline.

Item: Though the purchase is expected to help the county meet long-range office-expansion and parking needs, as yet there are no firm plans for immediate use of the acquisition.

Question: Why not let businesses, if they wish, stay after July 1 on a month-by-month basis, until it's known to what immediate use the buildings will be put?
