MECHANICSVILLE - Thomas Alfred Hughes, Sr., age 90, formerly of Wytheville, died Monday at his residence. He was born in Smyth County a son of the late Edward Campbell Hughes and Alice McKee Hughes. He was a retired employee of the Bailey Lumber Company and a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Boyd Hughes. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Alberta and Addison Crews, Atlanta, Ga.; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas A. and Jeanne Hughes, Jr., of Mechanicsville; three granddaughters, Lucinda Hughes, Betsy Rose, and Mary Buchanan; three sisters, Hattie Bell Goode of New Castle; Nan Pierce, Chilhowie; Sue Blair, Wytheville. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Wytheville Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Taylor officiating. Interment will be in the West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wytheville Baptist Church. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of arrangements.
