TEEN'S LEG BROKEN

A rescue squad vehicle hit and broke the leg of a 16-year-old boy who was walking down a rural road Sunday afternoon.

State Trooper J.R. Fore declined to release the name of the injured boy, who was sideswiped by an ambulance as he walked down Virginia 16 about five miles south of Marion at 3:20 p.m. Sunday.

Fore said Jackie D. Stone, 61, of Sugar Grove was driving the ambulance carrying a patient to Smyth County Community Hospital.

Fore said the young man had driven to his girlfriend's home, but found the house empty. His car broke down in her driveway and he started walking to a telephone.

Fore said the youth saw his girlfriend and her parents driving home and turned around to walk back to her house when he apparently stepped into the road.
