COLD, RAIN DELAY OPENING OF NEW PRISON

Construction problems from wet weather and an early winter cold spell will delay the opening of a new state prison in Buchanan County until July or August, according to state corrections officials.

The prison on Keen Mountain was originally scheduled for completion by April. Work on another new state prison being built in Greensville County is running about two months behind schedule, pushing its opening back to September.

Both facilities were to take prisoners from the old state Penitentiary in Richmond, which was scheduled to close June 30. That closing will now be delayed.
