LOWER GAS RATE RISE APPROVED BY SCC

The State Corporation Commission has approved an increase of about $444,000 from United Cities Gas Co. customers in Virginia, about $732,000 less than the company requested.

The company must now refund, with interest, the difference between the approved rate and a higher interim rate implemented Dec. 1 pending an SCC decision.

The SCC allows the Brentwood, Tenn.-based company 1.8 percent more in revenue. United Cities had wanted 4.7 percent more.

Its 15,000 Virginia customers include residents of Bristol, Abingdon, Marion, Wytheville, Pulaski, Radford and Blacksburg.
