FORTUNE, FORBES IN LISTING FAST-DRAW

Fortune and Forbes magazines on Tuesday unveiled dueling lists of America's corporate titans that agreed on one thing: General Motors Corp. is the nation's largest public company.

The Fortune 500 list ranked the nation's largest industrial firms by sales. Forbes measured them by sales, profits, assets and stock market value. It was the first time in recent memory that both lists were released the same day.

Behind GM, Fortune's top 10 were: Ford Motor Co., Exxon Corp., International Business Machines Corp., General Electric Co., Mobil Corp., Philip Morris Cos., Chrysler Corp., E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., and Texaco Inc.
