VIOLIN RECITAL SET FOR SUNDAY

Violinist Benedict Goodfriend will give a recital Sunday at 4 p.m. in Greene Memorial United Methodist Church.

No admission will be charged, but there will be a voluntary offering. Proceeds will be used to establish a college scholarship fund for a deserving Roanoke Valley music student. The concert is sponsored by the Thursday Morning Music Club.

Goodfriend will perform selections by Bach, Kreisler, Paganini, Ysaye, Bartok, Bloch, Tchaikovsky and Sarasate. Pianist Mary Ann Blasko and violinist Jane Wang also will take part in the program.

Goodfriend is a member of the Kandinsky Trio, a chamber ensemble in residence at Roanoke College. He is an honors graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, where he was concertmaster and a soloist with the symphony orchestra. He also has appeared as soloist with the Shepherd School of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra and the New River Valley Symphony Orchestra.

Goodfriend said a competition for the music scholarship will take place in May and will be announced. It will be open to any Roanoke Valley student who is entering college to study music.
