Argentine authorities approved the extradition last month of Joseph Schwammberger, who has reportedly been in ill health since his arrest outside the north-central city of Cordoba on Nov. 13, 1987. He had been living in Argentina for decades, most of the time in La Plata, near Buenos Aires.
Schwammberger, 78, had been a fugitive since he disappeared from a train in 1948 while being taken from Germany to U.S. military authorities in Austria for trial. He reportedly found a way to Argentina.
Prosecutors allege he was responsible for the deaths of up to 5,000 people.
