CHRISTIANSBURG ZONING FLAP ENDS BEFORE IT STARTS

About 60 people crowded into Town Council chambers Tuesday night to oppose plans to build three duplexes near their subdivision.

But just after they began speaking - telling council members the duplexes would be inappropriate "spot zoning" and would increase traffic in a neighborhood with dozens of children - Town Manager John Lemley told them the developer had withdrawn the rezoning request.

Sam Simpkins had sought to build the homes on 1.6 acres on Chrisman Street. The property is just outside the Atkinson Acres subdivision near Interstate 81.

The land will remain zoned for single-family residential homes.

On another matter, council agreed to pave two streets: Bradley Drive between Virginia 114 and Patton Drive, and Elk Drive between Mink Street and U.S. 11.

It approved plans to resurface all or part of West Main, Aspen and Chrisman streets; Atkinson Road; Marshall, Ash, Maple, Gum and Mulberry drives; and Birch and Poplar lanes.

Total cost of the projects is $157,410.

In other business, council:

Agreed to rezone 1.7 acres on North Franklin Street from agricultural to general business. Ray Alcorn, representing Park Realty, said there were no firm plans for the property.

Set a May 1 public hearing on a request by Bill Matthews to rezone 13 remaining acres of former Virginia Tech horticulture farm land to general business.

The land is a narrow strip behind the Market Place shopping center.
