CHILDREN BLAMED IN MAX MEADOWS FIRE

The Wythe County Sheriff's Department has traced a fire that destroyed a small barn in the Max Meadows area Saturday to three youngsters playing with a cigarette lighter.

Paul Howery's barn on Virginia 610 apparently caught fire shortly after 3 p.m., said Investigator Jeff Ratliff. He said his investigation led to three children - ages 5, 6 and 8 - lighting paper and throwing it into the barn.

Howery and the children's parents have reached an agreement to avoid prosecution.
