FRANKLIN SCHOOL BUDGET REMAINS INTACT

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors voted 4-3 Tuesday to make no cuts in a proposed $27.8 million school budget before holding a public hearing.

The vote was the first time in recent memory that the supervisors have not asked the Franklin County School Board to make significant reductions in its budget.

The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 23 at the Franklin County Courthouse in Rocky Mount.

The supervisors agreed to OK the school budget in part because the School Board made more than $268,000 in cuts just before submitting it last month.

The proposed 1990-91 spending plan would require an additional $700,000 - an 8 percent increase - in local tax revenues over the current year.

Under the budget, the county would give teachers and other employees expanded fringe benefits instead of a salary increase. The county would fund the 5 percent retirement payments now paid for by employees and would pay an additional $40 per month toward medical insurance premiums.

Supervisors voting in favor were: Charles Ellis, Gills Creek; Mike Brooks, Union Hall; Homer Murray, Boone; and Gus Forry, Rocky Mount. Voting against were Gordon Washburn, Snow Creek; Ronnie Woods, Blue Ridge; and Wayne Angell, Blackwater.

The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to give final approval to the School Budget on April 30, one week after the public hearing.
