CHILD LABOR FINES TOP $11,000

Fines against Virginia businesses cited for violation of child labor laws exceed $11,000, the U.S. Labor Department said.

The Labor Department's crackdown is the second wave of Operation Child Watch, a strike force established to uncover violations of child labor law.

Nationwide, the department's investigations - begun during the week of March 12 - have found that about 11,000 youngsters were illegally employed, officials said.

Tuesday's announcement of 60 violations in Virginia is a preliminary figure, said Larry Lutwin, a spokesman for the department's regional office in Philadelphia.

An earlier announcement had disclosed that 207 minors were found to be working illegally in 72 Virginia establishments. As the remaining investigations are completed, additional businesses will be cited and assessed civil penalties, the Labor Department said.

The businesses can appeal the findings.

Fines totaling $11,680 were brought against food businesses in the Richmond area, Altavista, Roanoke, Salem, Madison Heights and Lynchburg.
