Overall, the zigzagging stock market in the United States hurt the typical investor in the first three months, according to the most recent quarterly reports by Lipper Analytical Services. The average stock mutual fund fell 2.31 percent, compared with a 3.01 percent decline in Standard & Poor's 500 stock index.
Many portfolio managers had set aside larger-than-average amounts of their assets in Treasury bills, so they managed to outpace the broader market, said A. Michael Lipper, president of the firm.
