TOWN THAT REJECTED AIDS VICTIM RELENTS

Ryan White's hospitalization has softened hearts in the town that fought to bar him from its schools, where residents recall the painful episode as an unavoidable chapter in the nation's education on AIDS.

"I don't think that anybody in Kokomo feels good about what happened," said Art Peirce, a longtime resident. He described Kokomo's reaction to White as one of fear.

White, 18, remained in critical condition today at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis with an AIDS-related respiratory infection complicated by hemophilia.
