OBIT-BEVILLE, S.

BEVILLE, STUART M.\ BLACKSBURG - Stuart McGuire Beville died Thursday, April 5, at his home. Mr. Beville was born in Blackstone, Va., in 1913. The youngest child of Dr. Richard P. and Kate Patrick Beville, he was preceded in death by his sister, Katherine and his two brothers, Richard and Patrick. He graduated from Blackstone High School and received B.A. and M.A. Degrees from Duke University. He did additional graduate work in Education at UVA, Wake Forest, University of Colorado, University of Chicago and Teacher's College in Columbia. He served as teacher, coach and principal in several schools in Southside, Va. and in 1954 became Superintendent of Schools in Prince William County, Va. and remained in that position until 1972, during the period of dramatic population growth in the county. It was during these years that the school system instituted the first Middle Schools in the state and went to a year round education program. As one means of dealing with its population growth, Mr. Beville was a lifelong member and active Layman in the United Methodist Church and was President of Kiwanis Clubs in Crew and Manassas and later a Charter Member of a Blacksburg Rotary Club. He was a member of the Blacksburg Board of Zoning Appeals, the Board of Virginia Tech-Blacksburg YMCA, and the Board of the Montgomery County Educational Foundation. Mr. Beville left the Superintendency of Prince William County Schools in 1972 when it had grown to be the third largest in the state to join the College of Education at Virginia Tech as Director of Educational Extension and Associate Professor of Educational Administration. He retired from this post in 1975 as Associate Professor Emeritus, but was called back to public school work for four months in 1987 to be acting Superintendent by the Montgomery County School Board while they sought a permanent official. He is survived by his wife, Rosa; daughters, Alice Bostrom and husband Alexander of Yorktown, Va; Katherine Miller and husband, Conan of Fort Mitchell, Ky; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 8, at 3:00 p.m. in Blacksburg United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held Monday, April 9, at 1:00 p.m. in the Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone, Va. The family request that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of contributions to the Blacksburg Rescue Squad and to establish the Stuart M. Beville Scholarship Fund for Education for worthy students to the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the home 1403 Hillcrest Drive, Blacksburg, Va. Arrangements by Hoy-McCoy Funeral Home.
