"To my knowledge, he doesn't wear dresses," said a laughing Warner aide, Phil Smith, when told about the ad in The Jewish News, a weekly newspaper published in the Richmond suburb of Henrico County.
"I was hoping nobody noticed," said Fay Kranz, editor of the 4,000-circulation newspaper. "We're very embarrassed."
The picture of Warner was printed in the ad for Annette Dean, a women's clothing store.
Kranz said the problem was caused by a mix-up of pictures and copy when the paper was sent to printers in nearby Hopewell. Someone apparently confused the picture of Warner with the ad for Annette Dean.
"We nearly died when we saw it," she said.
She said staffers at the paper noticed the ad after the paper was printed and on its way to post offices for mailing. She was able to halt distribution of most of the papers, which were reprinted.
News of the ad also caught Annette Dean officials by surprise.
"Who better than him? You never know who you run into shopping at Annette Dean," said a spokeswoman for the business. "It's definitely amusing - and great publicity."
