UVA'S STALEY TOPS IN STATE

Dawn Staley, who averaged 18 points a game in leading Virginia to its first Final Four appearance, was voted the Division I women's basketball player of the year by the state's sports information directors.

Virginia coach Debbie Ryan was named the state's coach of the year.

Staley, a 5-foot-6 sophomore guard, led the Cavaliers to a 29-6 record, the most victories in the program's history.

Joining Staley on the all-state team were junior forward Vicki Harris of James Madison, senior forward Kelly Lyons of Old Dominion, senior center Amy Byrne of Virginia Tech and senior guard Pam Bryant of Richmond. - Staff report
