MOTORCYCLIST INJURED

A Christiansburg man was in critical condition Friday with head injuries he suffered when his motorcycle ran off Nellies Cave Road and hit a tree.

Robert Leon Howard, 23, was riding his 1983 Suzuki motorcycle when it ran off the road about 5 p.m. Thursday. It struck a tree and landed at the bottom of an embankment, Blacksburg police said.

Howard was wearing a helmet at the time, but received serious head injuries. The motorcycle was destroyed, police said.

The Blacksburg Rescue Squad took Howard to Montgomery Regional Hospital and he was transferred to Roanoke Memorial Hospital on the Life-Guard 10 helicopter.

A nursing supervisor said Howard was in the neuro-intensive care unit.
