WOMAN CLAIMS ATTACK INJURIES

A Roanoke woman who said she was assaulted by a group of men at the Lincoln Terrace housing project was listed in stable condition Friday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Cynthia Darlene Hollingsworth, 34, told police that she was getting out of a car about 12:30 a.m. Friday to visit friends in the 1700 block of Downing Street Northwest when a young man approached her and began to make threats.

As the man began to strike her, up to 20 people joined in the attack, Hollingsworth told police.

Hollingsworth was struck in the back of her head with a bottle and a necklace valued at $300 was ripped from her neck, police said.

So far, police have not been able to determine what initiated the attack.

Police did not learn of the beating until about 4 a.m. when they were called to Roanoke Memorial to investigate Hollingsworth's report.

***CORRECTION***

Published correction ran on April 14, 1990\ Cynthia D. Hollingsworth of Roanoke, who was assaulted at the Lincoln Terrace housing project Friday, April 6, said she was there to pick up someone who was visiting a friend and that she suffered a collapsed lung in the attack. A story in Saturday's paper said she had been there to visit a friend. A story in Thursday's paper based on information from police said she suffered a ruptured spleen, which Hollingsworth said was incorrect.
