The price increase, effective next fall, puts JMU tuition and fees at $3,048 annually. The price is $2,834 this year.
The price increases mean the total cost to attend JMU is now $6,956 a year for state residents, including room and board.
For out-of-state students, the total cost will rise 11.1 percent to $9,912.
The increase is about the same as price increase at the state's other 14 public-funded colleges and universities, a JMU spokesman said.
The board also approved a 1990-1991 operating budget of $105.3 million, an increase of 4.8 percent over the 1989-1990 figure.
Operating funds for the school will decrease about 5 percent but increases in salaries and some school operations resulted in the overall budget increase, the spokesman said.
JMU plans cuts in several areas to cope with the dwindling state funds, President Ronald Carrier told the board Friday.
