TECH STUDENT INJURED IN DORM WINDOW FALL

A Virginia Tech student from Franklin County who fell from a window of a third-floor dormitory room Friday was listed in serious condition after surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Joe Joplin III, 18, of Rocky Mount fell out of a window in Lee Hall about 2:30 p.m. Tech Police Chief Mike Jones said police did not know how or why Joplin fell and they were waiting to interview him later Friday.

Joplin was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital and transported in the Life-Guard 10 helicopter to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. A nursing supervisor there said surgery was performed early Friday and he was in intensive care.

Joplin, a freshman engineering major, lives in O'Shaughnessey Hall. His roommate, Mike McCormick, said Joplin had been visiting one of his Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers at Lee Hall.

"I don't know what happened," McCormick said. "But I hope he's gonna be OK."
