BOTETOURT PAIR KILLED IN CRASH

A Botetourt County couple died Friday afternoon after their car ran a stop sign and was struck in the driver's door, state police said.

Herbert Clifton Staton, 59, and his wife, Etta Belle Staton, 66, of Route 3, Buchanan, died at the scene of the 1:10 p.m. accident, said Trooper L.W. Patrick.

Their car had pulled into path of another car at Virginia 639 and U.S. 11. Both victims were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Herbert Staton was driving the Volkswagen at the time of the crash.

The driver of the other car, Vincent Bryan Hoppe, 31, also of Buchanan, complained of injuries to his legs, but was not taken to the hospital, Patrick said.

The highway had been dampened by rainfall Friday and Patrick said charges are unlikely.
