TECH STUDENT PUT ON PROBATION

A former Virginia Tech student accused last year of stealing more than $600 worth of clothes, sneakers and other items from the rooms of four other students has been put on probation for three years.

Michael L. Slavin, 23, was arrested in October by Tech police. Slavin, originally from Woodstock, had been living at Tech's Cochrane Hall. He moved to University Trailer Park after his arrest.

Slavin was charged with three counts of grand larceny and one of petty larceny. He was indicted by a Montgomery County Circuit Court grand jury in January and pleaded no contest to the charges.

Judge Kenneth Devore decided last week not to convict Slavin after reviewing a report on his background. He took the case under advisement for three years.
