YOUNG ARTISTS WIN CASH AWARDS

Joseph Casey Cosgriff of Christiansburg High School won first prize in the Sixth Annual Roanoke Arts Commission High School Art Exhibit.

His winning entry was a watercolor titled "Multiple Portrait of the Artist." The first prize was $200.

Winner of the $100 second prize was David Brooks of William Fleming High School. He won with an oil painting titled "Stereotype."

Merit certificates of $50 each went to David Grant, Chris Emery, Jennifer Roggenbuck and Chris Rorrer of Blacksburg High School; Brent West and Amanda Ragland of Jefferson Forest High School; Daniel Hatter of Lord Botetourt High School; Tommy Maxey of Patrick Henry High School; Brad Yeatts of Salem High School; and Allison Kirkendall of Cave Spring High School.

Singled out for special mention were Jason Hillard of Lord Botetourt; Gabrielle Jannis of Cave Spring; Kristi Terry and Shane Aud of Frankin County High School; Jeff Pickeral of William Byrd High School; Virgil Wong of Blacksburg; Suzanne Sawyer of Christiansburg; and Myra Garbee (and assistants) of Jefferson Forest.

Judges for the show were Vera Dickerson, Harriet Stokes and David Guerrero. Dickerson and Stokes are painters. Guerrero is a photographer and a staffer with The Arts Council of Roanoke Valley.

The exhibit is in the atrium of the Roanoke City Courthouse, where it will remain through April 28.
