BLACKLIST CHALLENGER FAULK DEAD AT 76

John Henry Faulk, a humorist whose challenge of 1950s blacklisting in broadcasting made him an honored advocate of free speech and civil liberties, died Monday of cancer. He was 76.

In 1957, Faulk publicly challenged AWARE Inc., a group that systematically blacklisted entertainment personalities over their alleged subversive views.

In response, AWARE accused him of subversive associations. Faulk sued, charging conspiracy to libel him and destroy his career. Faulk won the lawsuit.

His 1964 book "Fear on Trial" was produced as a television drama in 1975. Another book, "The Uncensored John Henry Faulk," was published in 1985.
