66 OF CENSUS FORMS RETURNED TO ROANOKE OFFICE

The U.S. Census office in Roanoke collected 66.4 percent of outstanding forms through Monday.

Matthew Duffy, manager of the office, said another 10 mail trays of forms arrived Tuesday.

Although the forms are still arriving, the pace has slowed. Duffy said 120 mail trays were received daily around the April 1 census day.

The Roanoke office supervises a district of 13 counties and 10 cities. It extends from Craig and Bath counties to Pittsylvania and Amherst.

Duffy said the district is divided into 468 regions or neighborhoods. Their response varies from very low to about 80 percent compliance.

He urged residents to complete and return their forms by mail. He said every form that must be collected by hand represents a cost to the taxpayers.

People who failed to receive forms or who have a problem with the forms can call the bureau's toll-free number at 1-800-999-1990.

Between 500 and 600 people will go to work as enumerators April 30. They will go door to door to gather forms from those who failed to respond.
