ROANOKER ATTACKED BY GROUP OF MEN; 3RD BEATING IN AREA

A Roanoke man told police he was beaten by a group of men early Tuesday as he searched for a telephone on Hunt Avenue Northwest.

George Richard Turner, 35, of Plantation Road was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, police said.

Turner told police he was walking in the 700 block of Hunt Avenue about 3 a.m. Tuesday when he was attacked by a group of men.

One of the men struck him in the head with a steel pipe, Turner told police.

Suffering fron neck, head and back injuries, Turner was able to crawl to a nearby parking lot and seek assistance, police said.

The incident marked the third serious assault at the Lincoln Terrace area in less than a week.

Most of the victims have been people who live outside of the projects. Two of the beatings have happened late at night.
