Ruth Makepeace Hayes, age 86, died Monday, April 9, 1990, at the Richfield Nursing Center. The only daughter of Thomas and Gertrude Morgan Makepeace, she was born November 11, 1903, in North Braddock, Penn. A graduate of Indiana State University, with an MA from the University of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Hayes taught for more than 25 years in the public schools of North Braddock and St. Petersburg, Fla. She moved to Roanoke in 1981, and became actively involved at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and in a variety of senior citizens programs. Her husband John Alvin Hayes died in 1977, and she is survived by three sons, Thomas Lee, Pownal, Maine; Richard Earl, Easton, Md. and Roanoke; William Regis, Fredericksburg; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. A memorial Eucharist will be held Wednesday, April 18, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Salem. There will be a reception immediately following the service in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Paul's Memorial Fund. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Salem Chapel.
