PEPSI'S LAST BOTTLER FIZZLES IN S. AFRICA

Pepsico Inc. is ending its small soft-drink business in South Africa following the failure of its Cape Town bottler.

A spokesman Wednesday cited "serious financial problems" and said the franchised bottler's assets, including bottles and equipment, will be sold to a South African Coca-Cola franchisee.

Although political conditions have improved with the release of black South African leader Nelson Mandela, "from an economic point of view, it just doesn't make any sense to stay with the business," the Pepsico spokesman said. - The New York Times
