BIKER, 6, HIT BY CAR, IS IN SERIOUS CONDITION

A 6-year-old Roanoke boy struck by a car Wednesday as he rode his bicycle was listed in serious condition this morning in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

A second youth was not seriously injured in a similar but unrelated accident Wednesday.

Mathew R. Reed, 6, of the 100 block of Courtney Avenue Northwest, was struck near his home about 5:45 p.m. by a car operated by Jeffrey Wayne Bower, also of Courtney Avenue, police said.

Bower, 27, told police that the bicycle suddenly pulled out in the road from behind a parked car. Bower tried to veer out of the way, he told police, but struck the child.

Reed was in the pediatric intensive care unit of Roanoke Memorial this morning. No charges have been filed.

In the second accident, 12-year-old Alberto Tony Dillard of Salem Avenue was struck by a car about 9:37 p.m. as he rode his bike in the 2700 block of Franklin Road Southwest.

The driver of the car involved in the accident, 21-year-old Dwayne Dean Deel of Hardy, told police that the youth cut into his path.

Deel, however, was charged with reckless driving and driving while intoxicated, police said.

Authorities said Dillard was not seriously injured.
