CHRISTIANSBURG HIGH WRESTLER HAS GREAT ALL-AMERICAN FINISH

Jeff Stanley of Christiansburg put the finishing touches on a most impressive high school wrestling resume this weekend.

Stanley, a two-time state Group AA champion, grappled his way to an eighth-place finish in the 189-pound class of the National High School Championships at the University of Pittsburgh. For doing so, he was accorded high school All America honors by the magazine Wrestling USA.

Stanley won two of five matches.

"I never was eliminated," he said. "I won when I had to. I lost by a couple of points to a guy from Iowa and in overtime to a guy from Louisiana who eventually finished third."

The top eight finishers were named All-Americans.

It was the first year for the tournament. Forty-one states were represented.

Stanley finished the high school season 27-0 and was the Timesland co-wrestler of the year with Martinsville 130-pounder Stacy Stockton.

Stanley has no firm plans for next year. "I'd like to go to college and wrestle, but I haven't heard anything from anybody yet," he said.

\ The Grundy wrestling juggernaut rolls on.

The Grundy Wrestling Club held its postseason little league tournament recently and 342 kids in kindergarten through seventh grade participated. All but about 35 of them are potential wrestlers for Grundy High.

The exceptions were wrestlers who live in the school district served by Hurley High, which started a program last season, according to club President Jim Wayne Childress.

Say this for the folks up in Grundy, they're good sports. When Stanley was soliciting donations to go to the national tournament in Pittsburgh, a contribution came from a supporter of Grundy High, Christiansburg's arch-Region IV rival.

\ After a one-year hiatus, American Legion baseball is back in Giles County.

Giles will be part of an expanded nine- and possibly 10-team Blue Ridge District this summer. The legion awaits word on whether there will be a combined team from the Wytheville-Carroll County-Grayson County area, league Commissioner Wayne LaPierre said.

The new coach is Danny Evans.

It appears as though the Giles County team will draw from Radford and Blacksburg as well as Giles and Narrows highs. In past years, Giles traditionally drew from just the county and Peterstown, W.Va.

The other new team is Franklin County, which has had an entry before.

According to LaPierre, if the district goes to 10 teams, there may be two divisions.

The other teams are Roanoke North, South and West; Bath County; Danville; Martinsville; Patrick County; and Danville.

\ Matt Martin's recovery from surgery to remove a brain tumor is progressing nicely.

Martin, a Radford High junior, has been back in school since mid-March and has been battling to catch up. He missed more than two months of school.

Tests confirmed late last week that the tumor has been eliminated and there were no signs that it was coming back, according to Buddy Martin, Matt's father.

Matt Martin, the 1989 Timesland golfer of the year, has been putting his game back into shape. Although he isn't near being back to the level he was before the operation, he will try to qualify for the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Championship this summer.

"He's not going to miss many chances to play golf," Buddy Martin said. "I know that not much grass is getting cut back at the house."

\ Montie Brown of Pulaski County was chosen for the All-Roanoke Valley Junior High basketball team by the league's coaches. He averaged 15.5 points per game for Pulaski County, which won one game.
