COLES LEADS SOUTH WITH 27 POINTS

Virginia Tech star Bimbo Coles scored 27 points to lead the South to a 130-125 victory over the East in the opening round of the Orlando (Fla.) All-Star Classic basketball event.

Jacksonville's Dee Brown had 18 points and Phil Henderson of Duke finished with 16.

For the East, Temple's Duane Causwell had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Connecticut's Tate George chipped in with 21 points.

In an earlier game, Bo Kimble of Loyola Marymount made 17 points in the second half and Texas' Travis Mays scored 19 to lead the West past the Midwest 110-99.

Willie Burton of Minnesota led the Midwest with 23 points. Ohio University's David Jamerson scored 21.

The Classic, now in its third year, features round-robin competition under NBA rules among four squads of the nation's top seniors.
