VIRGINIA SEARCH TAKES A DAY OFF

It is unlikely that Virginia will announce a new head basketball coach until next week, although momentum seems to be growing for assistant coach Jeff Jones.

Jones and fellow assistant Craig Littlepage were interviewed Tuesday by athletic director Jim Copeland, who admittedly has spoken with other prospective candidates.

The involvement of Jones and Littlepage could be one reason for the continuing delay. School officials might be reluctant to make an announcement and place the loser - or losers - in an awkward position at the team banquet tonight at University Hall.

Jones, 29, has received numerous endorsements from alumni and other boosters. The chief concerns appear to be his age and lack of experience as a head coach.

Littlepage, 38, has been a head coach for six years, but he had 20-loss seasons in each of his three years at Rutgers.

Copeland's new list is said to include head coaches Clem Haskins of Minnesota, Paul Westhead of Loyola Marymount and Mike Jarvis of Boston University. However, it does not appear that talks have reached the serious stage with any new candidates.

The job was offered to Providence coach Rick Barnes, who accepted, then changed his mind. Xavier coach Pete Gillen declined an invitation to visit UVa, and Mike Montgomery of Stanford and Bruce Parkhill of Penn State removed their names from consideration.
